Li Jiang and Su Hua are discussing what to wear when receiving the British students next month. Li recommends the traditional Chinese dress while Su prefers the school uniform.

I would be happy to wear traditional Chinese clothes at the welcome ceremony. Firstly, this is precisely what the British visitors are expecting. They come to learn about Chinese culture with their own eyes. Their Chinese peers in the typical Chinese dress would be highly impressive. The school uniforms are fine, but not special enough to give a unique Chinese flavour. Secondly, the inconvenience is not a problem if our purpose is to share Chinese culture. It is just the so-called inconvenience that displays the richness, delicacy and great fascination of Chinese culture with a history of thousands of years.

The traditional Chinese clothes, it seems to me, will make the occasion very Chinese and inviting to the British guests.

A survey carried out in Ningbo shows that content about Chinese culture in English textbooks is rare. Students can not receive enough information about Chinese culture in English either from English textbooks or classroom teaching. Such ignorance of the native culture in English teaching and learning is called cultural aphasia, which is a major problem and is quite common.

According to another survey conducted by researcher Zhou W．(2009), 74% of the subjects claim that they are more confident of and familiar with Chinese culture as they were born and live in China. However, 79% of them, who have been learning English for at least 16 years, are unable to describe Confucianism or Taoism in English. The researchers recommend that educators should take measures to help students counter Chinese cultural aphasia.

When I was mostly in middle school and high school I was tormented because I was ugly. It still happens from time to time. But it was much worse in middle school and first year of high school. Random strangers would call me ugly. Once I was walking to school and the boys behind told his friend “yo, that girl is mad ugly.” Another incident I had was in the bus filled with rowdy kids and as I pushed the door to get out, a kid I walked by saying “ugly bitch.” I had groups of girls also say that to me and would give me nasty faces. All of this has put me into depression. I do not like most boys and they don’t like me because I am not pretty enough and treat me like crap because of it. I get very anxious to be in public a lot and in school as I still have groups of mean girls staring me down and boys too. I have enough of feelings like an alien, I replay these horrible memories over and hate it, I hate I was born with this face, why couldn’t everyone be born equally beautiful? How can I get over this pain and not be so anxious? I think I am hideous, especially the sides of my face.

Not looking beautiful, a girl is always scorned or even insulted by others, which makes her upset and at a loss for what to do with her life.

While I hate to admit it, people always tend to judge a person by his or her appearance initially. Personally, if I am blessed with a beautiful face, I should be thankful for the gift. If not, I see no reason why I should be chained by a sense of inferiority. As a saint once put it, external beauty is but skin deep, it is our inner beauty that lasts.

An elephant was constantly disturbed by a restless fly, who asked the elephant about the secret of remaining calm. The elephant revealed that calmness would be obtained when one's senses and attention were focused.

After reading the story, I was inspired by what the elephant said. The ability to focus one's attention is the key to success in doing anything.

This reminds me of what happened when I entered high school as a Senior One student. I was so excited to find that there were various student organizations and afterclass activities intended for us students. During the first term, I was attracted whenever there was a notice from a student group and I was eager to find out more about it. As a result, I didn't spend enough time on my studies, nor could I settle down on my homework everyday. Consequently, I failed in an important exam.

I have learned from this experience that one should focus on one thing at a time before he can get it well done. As a Senior Two student, I intend to set a clear goal for myself first. Then I will keep it up. Only when I have a clear and determined mind can I achieve my goal in the future.
