The idea that listening to music during exercise can increase motivation is nothing new. But Costas Karageorghis, a sport psychologist at London’s Brunel University, wants to 21 the notion one step further.
He is creating a playlist for the Run to the Beat half-marathon (a marathon has to be 26 miles, or 42.195 km) in London, a first-ever 13-mile running event this October. At the competition, music will be played along the route to help improve the runners’ 22 .
According to Karageorghis, one of the primary 23 of listening to music during exercise is that it 24 as a distraction, thus reducing how 25 you feel you’re working by up to 10 percent.
“The music that will be played will be scientifically selected to 26 the physiological and psychological demands of a half-marathon,” said Karageorghis, who has studied the relationship between exercise and music for two decades.
The data on runners who have signed up for Run to the Beat, as well as their personal music 27 , have been taken into account by Karageorghis in shaping the playlist. “We’ll be combining those songs that 28 repeatedly,” said Karageorghis.
Karageorghis said it was too _ 29 to reveal the playlist, but he believes that the majority of songs played will have mass 30 .” “These tracks appear to go beyond age, gender and ethnicity (种族) in the UK,” he said.
