i was 15 when i walked into mccarley's bookstore in ashland. as i was looking at 26 on the shelves, the man behind the counter, 27 , asked if i'd like 28 . i needed to start 29 for college, so i said yes. i 30 after school and during summers for the lowest wages, and the job helped 31 my freshman year of college. i would work many other jobs: i made coffee in the students union during college, i was a hotel maid and 32 made maps for the u.s. forest service. but selling books was one of the most 33 . one day a woman asked me for books on cancer. she seemed fearful. i showed her almost 34 we had at that time 35 and found other books we could order. she left the store less 36 , i've always remembered the 37 i felt in having helped her.
